Third session of Generation 3

Over the weeks the group debates what they're doing next about the mirror.

Dylith doesn't think it the mirror can be sealed.  Val wants to destroy the mirror to prevent any further monster attacks.  Ionathon doesn't want to destroy the mirror and sets wards over the the mirror.  The AACK Dojo is turned over to the Vistani for use as a Cultural Center and as a training center for Remus to teach Shovel arts while guarding the mirror.  (Is this like giving Hanford back to the Native Americans or a bombed out island back to the Native Hawaiians.  Oh wait, we did the latter…)

The days go by.  During one shovel training session a young lad named Fernando (cue ABBA) starts to stare off into the mirror.  An alarm goes off in Ionathon's study and he heads off to the <s>dojo</s> Vistani Cultural Center scooping up Val, Balog, and Luduvic along the way.  When they get to the VCC they notice Fernando is missing.

Balog, Luduvic, and Remus head off searching for Fernando and follow his tracks to an alley where they find a black goopish thing standing there (like Fernando covered in black goop) over the body of a young woman.

Back in the <s>AACK Dojo</s> VCC, a black goo monster comes through the mirror and Val, Ionathon, and Margret fight if off.  Split party fight!

(My notes get vague and sloppy at this point.)

After the fight, the gloop falls away from Fernando, but it leaves him unconscious.  The young lady looks unharmed (or was she dead?) and is identified as a local barmaid(?) Shirley (Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!)Deputy Enos Strate runs up with some guards.  Enos is told that a monster attacked Shirley and Fernando and is still on the loose in the city.  He is sent with the guards to the VCC to watch the mirror.

The team investigate Shirley's roommate Laverne and question Fernando when he wakes.  The team heads back to the mirror and hear a scream on the way.  They run to a secluded alley and find dead Sheirly with Enos and two friends.

(And here end my notes.  Did we have a second fight?  Was Shirley dead earlier?  I seem to recall something about sending a body being sent to the mortuarium.)

Second session of Generation 3

Picking up shortly after the last fight.  The heroes take a breather and examine the At Amic Carrottette Knights dojo and notice the domovoi (house spirit) who looks like part old man and part dust bunny.

Luduvic offers his flask and makes friends with it. When the domovoi is questioned about the man who ran into the dojo, the domovoi says he went away, but doesn't really know (or care) where or how.  A quick inspection reveal no secret doors or exits in the dojo.

Remus notices something odd about the large mirror, but can't pin point the oddity.  Ionathon and Dylith join magic to activate the mirror portal and everyone suddenly finds themselves in a different room, a different dimension?  The room looks lived in, with a bed, desk, and personal items, and a long mirror like the one in the dojo.

Smoky mist skeletons appear and the fight begins.

After destroying the mist skeletons, the heroes explore the room and find no exits.  They do find boxes of journals spanning years.  Someone (Balog ?) wants to return to town in case the person who was here swapped to town when they swapped to here.

Dylith says not to worry, no one dying in town.  Remus asks how he knows that.  Val points out that Dylith returns to town whenever someone dies or at births.

Beat.  Awkward pause.

They find themselves transported back to the dojo and start going through the journals.  The journals span some 30 years and tell the tale of a group of At Amic Carrottette Knights Kids that went in search of power.  After Denis disappeared, no one could make fire fist balls and the AACKK wanted power to fight off the evil if it returned.  As the years went by, some of the AACK Kids started to disappear and the journals implied that they were being sacrificed by writer.  The last journal states that a last sacrifice is needed to complete the ritual.

While the other examined the journals, Dylith headed back to the mortuarium to check on Trevor DeVries.  Instead Dylith finds Antol (Denis' padwan AACK Kid) waiting for him.

Dylith's skeleton gets everyone to run over to the mortuarium in time to see Antol slit his own throat, blood spurting everywhere.

Val shoots Dylith intending to bleed him and hoping his blood will mix with Antol's blood and disrupt or stop the blood ritual from completing.  It doesn't stop the ritual.  A gloopy, blob rises from the blood pool and several mini blobs.

The heroes defeat the blood monster and realize Antol was the author of the journals.  What comes next?

First session of Generation 3

50 years have past in Ravenloft.  The At Amic Carrottette Knights have decline since Denis disappears.  Remus starts training the Knights in the Ways of the Shovel, now the Shovel and Fists Knights.

A few bards travel from town to town, spreading news, songs, and gossips.  A tradition set down form the days of Wilhelm.  Ludvic also travels between towns running messages.

Town Council: Bishop Ionathan, Merchant Natalia Blucher, and Farmer Franz Ferdinand.

The old Vistani Matron has passed on and the Vistani have started to split into two groups; some moving into the towns and others who stay in the country (Town vs. Country, Modern vs. Traditional, Reformation vs. Orthadox?)  Xander is the leader of the Townies and Xarena is the leader of the Country.

The Bishop and the Hammerman.  The fighter takes the up the Hammer as Ionathon no longer wields it and instead does all healing. (Sean changed Ionathon from Paladin to Cleric class.)

Val, a veteran of a vague, distant war, wandered into town a few years back and was later made town constable.

The last few years the Vistani have been calling for a spot on the Council.  The Warm Fire is still owned and operated by the Blucher family.  The DeVries family (Trevor) run the hospitals as Dylith spends most of time in the country learning the ways of the Vistani medicine.  But oddly (or not), Dylith still comes into town for births and deaths.

Note:  Xarena looks like a woman of importance.

Remus going to Xander's home before Council meeting to discuss adding Vistani seat to Council.  Remus enters and finds Xander murdered in a ritualized fashion.  He glimpses a shadow exiting the window and rushes out to follow it.

Waited Levier (Hammerman) argues with Bishop Ionathon against allowing a Vistani seat as that might then influence church policy.

Balog, the village ne'er-do-well, ambling behind the houses, sees a suspicious person exiting from a window and yells, "Burglar!" and gives to chase to Remus.  Remus stops and the council and constable gather in Xander's house to review the scene.  Ionathon casts a ritual to divine more details and accidently finishes the summoning spell.  Black smoke spews from the body and flies out of the house.  Everyone follows it to the old At Amic Carrottette dojo (insert Gymkata joke) to fight black wispy creatures.

Third session of Generation 3

(Game mechanic: Atticus is running his Warlord character as a pair of children who shout orders at the other characters.)

Retcon:  Three months have NOT past (no extended rest for characters) since the fighting the wolf creatures and burning the hut and we pick up back at the village.

Later the same evening everyone returns to town.  A mob starts to gather in the town square as they egg each other that they need to kill the beast the got away while Dylith and Remus inspect the dead bodies. Denis tries to incite the mob to instead attack the castle and take down the evil lord, but they remain unswayed and set out to kill the beast.

The mob lock the children and the others in the cellar of the Warm Fire to prevent them from warning the beast.  Dylith and Remus come by a bit later and frees them, then they all head out to intercept the mob.

(Luigi fails his tracking/survival checks)  Luduvic leads them to the giant's wolf cave but not before the mob.  A smaller group of the mob (about 10) have surrounded the wolf and are attacking it while the rest of the mob stand at the edge ready to attack.

Combat time!  The heroes both guilt the larger watchers into leaving and also attack the 10 attacking the wolf.  They successfully thin down the mob until the last one, the Burgomeister, shoots his crossbow at the wolf.  John Blucher runs out from the cave and in a cinematic moment, runs in front of the wolf, taking the hit while yelling, "Noooooo!!!!!"

John dies and Luduvic turns and kills the Burgomeister.  Black, foul smoke rises from the Burgomeister's corpse and forms into a three headed monster (hydra stat block) thing.  As the heroes decapitate one head, another one appears.  This continues until it finally dies.

After affects:

Luduvic, after MURDERING the Burgomeister, likely goes into hiding again.

The Church sanctifies a Bishop (Smith?) to head the Church. (Wait, I thought it already had a Bishop?  Pope?)

The castle is abandoned and the townsfolk don't pay much notice of that change.

Denis helps form a City Council to replace the Burgomeister, moving away from a feudal system.

The At Amic Carrottette Knights start their young Scouts program (Naruto?)

After the murder of John, Margret Blucher runs off to live with the Vistani.

Here ends the saga of Generation 2.  Generation 3 to pick up 50 years later.

Second session of Generation 3

(Game mechanic: Atticus is running his Warlord character as a pair of children who shout orders at the other characters.)

Three months have past (extended rest for characters) since the fighting the wolf creatures and burning the hut.

Daria laments that she hasn't seen Aerdric (sp?) since that incident and suspects he may have run off.

Dylith has the inspired insight that the transformation of the wolf creatures required the blood from someone special, but he has no clue whom.  (Viewers get a shot of Strahd in his lab making another.)

Denis tries to organize outside hamlet into resisting the new Count, but little interest from them.  Along the way the fights off a wolf, impresses a young local boy named Antol and thus gains a padwan for the At Amic Carrottette Knights.

Later, the kids are out playing when they notice a large wolf watching them.  They run to tell Daria and she sends the kids back to town while she goes off to search for the wolf with bow in hand.  She later returns without incident.

Two weeks (?) pass and the kids have noticed Daria with the large wolf on occasion while they're out in the woods.

Late one evening Strahd comes knocking at the city gate to visit The Warm Fire tavern and see Daria.

Denis holds him up at the gate while the Mayor rush over to let him in.

At The Warm Fire Strahd asks about Daria and Luduvic pops out from among the bushes to tell him that Daria is likely hanging out with her wolf.  Strahd does not take it well and little John tells Strahd that he wants to be a Knight.  Strahd takes little John's arm and promises him when he's of age, he will belong to Strahd (creepy) then Ludvic stands and grabs the other arm of little John and said something ("No."  I can't remember.)  The energy created by the contact of Strahd and Ludvic is a vortex of unhappiness (despair?) which causes John to start crying.

Strahd leaves and shortly after exiting the city gate a large wounded wolf staggers into town.  Wilhelm and Denis want to bind it but the kids shout a greeting that the wolf is Daria's friend and wnat to know where is Daria.  Ionathon heals the wolf and they all go off to find Daria.

The wolf leads them to a clearing where a Daria is fighting off a pack of Dire wolves and collapses as they arrive.  The party kills off the Dire wolves and the giant wolf runs off before the other towns people arrive.  The kids and Dylith run off to track the wolf to his lair while everyone else returns to town.

Over the next few weeks the kids and Dylith get to know the wolf better.

(Short rest before next time although two(?) game time weeks will pass before next session.)

Second session of Generation 2

(Interesting game mechanic, Atticus is running his Warlord character as a pair of children who shout orders at the other characters.)

NPC Bishop of Church named Smit(?)

Several days have past since party at castle Ravenloft.  Daria getting letters from Strahd, but she finds it creepy and she's interested in Edrick (grandson of Aleksander Aleksandrov).

Martin comes to Dylith with info on a dark flower in the forest.  Dylith gathers a party from the tavern to examine the plant.  Voices arguing near plant as the team approaches.  Kids and Denis sneak forward and see two figures and the figure in black throws the other, a dark Vistani into the maws of the large carnivorous plant and teleports away.

We fight the plant and after killing it, it turns into Undead carnivorous plant.

We return to town and decide to head back to the plant and see if we can back track where the people came from in the first place.  Trail leads to shack with blood and lab equipment.  Large wolves and a mannish wolf attack.

After killing the wolves we find them wearing earrings, tattered clothes, and markings matching the dark Vistani, as if they had been transformed.  We burn the corpses and hut before returning to town.

Several game time months to pass before the next session.

First session of Generation 2

(Interesting game mechanic, Atticus is running his Warlord character as a pair of children who shout orders at the other characters.)

Midday at the Blucher farmstead and the Dark Vistani attack.  Fight, fight, fight.  At the end of the battle some Knights ride up and clear off the other Dark Vistani.  The courtier introduces themselves as Knights of the new lord in residence, Count Strahd III.  He invites everyone to the welcome celebration at the castle in a few days. Dylth gets a sniff of undead when talking to them.

Remus goes to the Vistani leader and she's concerned that she sees dark uncertainties. Wilhelm encourages everyone to attend.  Dylth and Denis tries to convince the Burgomeister and Bishop to not send everyone to attend.

(Hilarity ensues as Dylth the necromancer tries to explain the "bad" undead to "young" old man Martin who doesn't know that Dylth is a necromancer.)

Denis is suspicious and trains the local guard in anti calvary tactics.

Party day (game mechanic wise, story days have passed but we don't take extended rest.)

Most of the villagers attend the party, Remus attends as a representative of the Vistani.  (Game mechanic, the servants are undead and flood Dylth's "Sense Undead" power.)

Strahd appears and he's a handsome, charming man in his 40's.  He quickly focuses his attentions on Daria.

The kids John & Margret go exploring to find the chapel along with Remus.  They break into the chapel and find it strangely untouched by time.  Blood and bodies lie about as if the fight just ended.  (For the TV viewers at home, scene cuts between the original fight room and the current room, only difference being the lighting in the room.  As Remus explores the room, the TV scenes would cut between him and flashbacks of Valeria in the exact same positions).

An angry Dark Vistani storms into the festivities and yells about being slighted from not being invited to the party.  He summons undead.  Fight, fight, fight.

The Dark Vistani and undead are defeated.  Strahd promises to Remus that the regular Vistani are safe and protected in his valley and that the Dark Vistani must be rooted out and destroyed.  Strahd provides a gilded carriage for Daria to ride on her return to her home.

End session.  (Game mechanic wise, no extended rest).

RP MVP award to Atticus for his lisping portrayal and comments as John & Margret.

(Hi Niall!)

... from the Memoir of Valeria
the start of something big

Today I witnessed evil for the first time. Not in the usual sense of people doing bad things. I've seen that. I saw the death and destruction brought by the bandits that attacked our village, watched those same bandits murder my parents as they sacrificed themselves in order for me to run and hide. I saw the greed of man when I was sold to the Vistani like some kind of trinket. I've seen those in pain hurt others by stealing and/or lying to loved ones and strangers alike. This is why I'm grateful for my plot of land I was able to inherit. Why I'm grateful that it's technically outside the boundaries of the village.

But, that's not what I'm talking about. No, today… I witnessed REAL evil. Looked into its eyes and stood firm to meet it. Terrified as the encounter was, the end result shakes me to my core. The fact that I'm not sure we ended anything… not sure if it can be ended. No, I think we are at the beginning of something. Something bigger than ourselves.

………………………

Postscript: It seems I still don't know what 'peace' means to me. I tried to live a quiet life, I really did. Yet I find myself running into battle, feeling some unfounded responsibility to protect those in the village… to protect even the Vistani, regardless of how contentious our past has been.

After returning to the village with Iryna, Peter and Luduvic rally the villagers to renew work on the palisade and rebuilding the church.

Martin de Vries appears in town and assists Dylith with healing Iryna.

Helga is Burgomeister GF.  (Is there a wife?)

It's the middle of the night and farmer Betty runs up saying her children Nancy and Drew are missing.

Valeria jumps on her dog Clark and starts tracking the kids.  Everyone follows and the trail up to the old abandoned Ravenloft castle. As Valeria knocks on the door, a Vistani voices calls out, "He's not ready yet."  Zombies rise from the ground and 3 Dark Vistani walk around the corner.

Battle ensues and we enter castle.

Table discussion/decision/inspiration that the castle is a creature of chaos (reference to Castlevania) and will change and cannot be destroyed.

Sounds of chanting in unknown language leads us to the chapel where Andreas, leader of the Dark Vistani, is in the middle of a ritual with book and dagger and the two children laid before him on the alter.

Valeria vaults over the Dark Vistani blocking the alter with her shovel and attacks Andreas with an overhead strike with her shovel.

Fight fight fight

As Valeria kills Andreas, he calls out, "Help me Master!"  Andreas bursts into flames and burns into a pile of ash.  The flames reveal the stained glass window behind the alter with the old Barovian religion symbols, a stylized Sun with a silhouette of a raven below it.

Valeria goes down.  (adapting Sentinels of the Multiverse mechanic, no dead turn, player can inspire other players to grant temp buff)

Defeat the Vistani, rescue the kids, and revive Valeria.

Return to the village and inspire the townfolks to complete the Palisade and rebuild the church.

Old Solar region gets revival due to the inspiration from Luduvic and Dylith.  "Bring Light into Dark Places."  Dylith works with the death rituals.  Luduvic remains an outsider and doesn't lead church.

Kids Nancy and Drew keep telling everyone that Valeria saved them.  Inspires others to marital activities based on Valeria, but she doesn't approve of that stuff.  (Table discussion: a Shovel Knight HAS to show up sometime in a future generations.  A bastardization evolution of Valeria's beliefs/action.)

Here ends the saga of Generation 1.  Generation 2 to pick up 50 years later.

Journal of Wilhelm de Beers

From the Central Barovian Library

Excerpt from the Journals of Wilhelm de Beers volume XXII.

It’s been 30 years since those disturbing events long ago in old Barovia.  I say old Barovia because the village has changed much from those innocent days long ago.  Maybe now, with the years between us, I can put to paper those strange events that I witnessed so long ago.

We had just returned to the village from recovering Iryna in the forest.  She had not been lost as we told some of the villagers, but had run off to meet someone.  I initially believed it was with a Vistani boy, but we soon learned otherwise.

We tracked her to a small clearing and we found her being intimate with some sort of beast.  When we attacked the beast and defeated it, it turned into a pillar of dark smoke and flew away.

We returned to the village in an agitated mood and Dylith and Péter stirred up the villagers into continuing work on the palisade in the middle of the night.  It was duing all this commotion that two little children went missing.  Valeria, yes, that Valeria, when off to track the missing children and we followed not far behind.  The trail let to the old abandoned Ravenloft castle where we found some undead monsters waiting for us.

Inside the castle we found the children bound to an alter by some corrupted Vastani who were in the middle of a ritual.  Again Valeria rushed into battle.  Her namesakes would be proud.

Valeria killed the Vestani leader, he called out for help to his master before burning into a pillar of black ash.  Who was this master of his?  What was the ritual going to do?  What caused him to burn into ash?  I still have no answers.

These questions still haunt me as well as the image of sun and raven in the stained glass window behind the burning Vistani.
